The 1634 date stone places the house in the reign of Charles I, eight years before the outbreak of the English Civil War. Its scale and commanding reception hall recall the larger houses of the district. Across the Atlantic, English settlements in North America were still young: Jamestown was less than 30 years old, and the Massachusetts Bay Colony had been established only four years earlier.

Local records connect the Hough family with Chorley in the seventeenth century. A deed from 1685 places Henry Hough and his wife Martha at the Stone House, the property’s historic name. Later records trace the Barlow family’s long association with the property, extending into the twentieth century. On 20 January 1993, Henry Sackville Barlow and Sir John Kemp Barlow sold the property.
